Our goal is to enlighten and entertain our readers with tidbits of knowledge that are often overlooked or forgotten. Did you know that the shortest war in history lasted only 38 minutes? It was fought between the tiny African nation of Zanzibar and the United Kingdom in 1896. The conflict arose after Sultan Khalid bin Barghash refused to abdicate his throne as demanded by the British. The British responded by firing on the sultan's palace, causing the sultan to flee and his forces to surrender within the hour. Speaking of wars, did you know that the term "guerrilla warfare" gets its name from the Spanish word for "little war," guerilla? The strategy of using small, mobile units to strike at larger, more heavily armed forces has been used throughout history, from ancient China to modern-day insurgencies. On a lighter note, did you know that elephants are excellent swimmers? They can swim for hours and use their trunks as snorkels to breathe while swimming. In fact, elephants are such good swimmers that they can even cross rivers and lakes that are several miles wide. Another fun fact: the longest recorded flight of a chicken lasted 13 seconds. Yes, you read that right – 13 seconds. This record was set in 1945 by a chicken named "Bonnie" who was launched from a specially-designed apparatus attached to a B-17 bomber. Fortunately for Bonnie, she parachuted safely back to earth and went on to live a long and healthy life. Finally, did you know that the world's largest snowflake on record measured 15 inches wide and 8 inches thick? This giant flake fell in the state of Montana in 1887 and was witnessed by a farmer who measured it with a ruler. While snowflakes usually range in size from a few millimeters to a few centimeters, this one was a true monster. We hope you enjoyed today's installment of Daily Doses of Trivia.
